Chevy Chase, MD – Today, Jared Solomon, candidate for the House of Delegates in District 18, is proud to announce the endorsements of a diverse group of District 18 local elected officials and Montgomery County community leaders. The group includes Kensington Mayor Tracey Furman, Town of Chevy Chase Mayor Mary Flynn, Council Chair of the Village of North Chevy Chase, Adrian Andreassi, and former Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party and former Chief of Staff to Representative Steny Hoyer Terry Lierman.

Mayor Tracey Furman: “I'm excited to support Jared Solomon for the House of Delegates. As a high school teacher, policy advisor to a U.S. Senator and social justice advocate, Jared is running for delegate with progressive ideas and youthful energy and enthusiasm. Jared began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Baltimore City and has dedicated his life to public service. He has worked for DC Public Schools and most recently as a policy advisor in the U.S. Senate. In Maryland, Jared has worked extensively to pass some of the state’s most important progressive legislation including the Maryland Dream Act, the Firearm Safety Act, and Earned Sick Leave. Jared, his wife Emily, and their rescue dog Jeeves live in Rock Creek Forest.

Solomon Shows Strong Fundraising in District 18 House of Delegates Race

Chevy Chase, MD – Jared Solomon, candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates in District 18, recently released his fundraising report for the first filing period ending January 10. During that time, Solomon raised over $42,000 and with a loan of $12,000 ends the period with more than $47,000 cash on hand. With 194 contributions, Solomon has raised more money than any candidate in the race up to this point.

“I’m honored and humbled by the show of support and generous contributions from my friends, loved ones, and neighbors. These funds will ensure that our campaign remains competitive so we can focus on the most important thing – talking to voters,” said Jared.

“Since 2017, our campaign team has knocked on more than 2500 doors and talked to thousands of voters in every part of the district. In the cold, heat, rain, and snow – we’ll continue to make sure that every voice is heard in District 18.”

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, like most high-profile Democrats lately, has been encouraging young people to get more involved in public service. One of his staffers decided to take his advice.

Three weeks ago, Jared Solomon, 32, left his role as Casey’s legislative assistant and policy adviser to run for the Maryland House of Delegates as a Democrat.

“He was running around the last eight months telling every young person he met that they should get involved,” Solomon said of his former boss.

“As you probably heard from a lot of folks, especially the Democrats, because I have four or five friends probably running for Congress this year, I just got frustrated,” the former staffer said.

Solomon lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and the 18th District he is running in includes Chevy Chase, Kensington, Wheaton, a small part of Rockville, and Silver Spring. (Each district in Maryland elects three delegates.) The primary is in June.

In Casey’s office, Solomon worked on immigration, LGBT and education policy — he was the lead staff negotiator in reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 2015. He said over the last seven months he also “became sort of an honorary member of our health care team.”

Casey has focused on pushing back on cuts to Medicaid and Solomon helped work on the Democratic conference’s stance on how those cuts affect schools. It’s an issue that frustrated him the most.

“Medicaid is an example of when progress [meant just] keeping the system intact,” he said. “Right now, one of the most effective places where we can create change is at the state level. I felt like it was time to get off the sidelines from being the behind-the-scenes staffer and put my hat in the ring.”

While Casey was sad to see him go, he encouraged Solomon to pursue his goal.

“Take the risk, if you fall flat on your face, at least you know you did it,” Solomon recalled the senator telling him.

He said Casey jokingly added, “‘Can’t you go back to Pennsylvania to run? We need you.’”

On Solomon’s last day in the office, Casey’s final piece of advice was: Just win.

The Pennsylvania native and University of Pittsburgh graduate got his first taste of politics interning for the House Judiciary Committee in the summer of 2008 between his first and second year at Teach for America, where he and his wife Emily both started their careers.

Solomon taught in Baltimore and then worked for the school system administration for D.C. Public Schools as a project coordinator on the critical response team.

“We were nicknamed the DCPS firefighters,” he said, because his job included everything from community meetings, working on the school breakfast program and working with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to create a new bus route, among other tasks.

“Working at DCPS was a hard job, to say the least,” he said.

Before he joined Casey’s office in 2014, he was vice president of budget policy at First Focus, a national children’s advocacy group.

Former High School Teacher, Policy Advisor to U.S. Senator, and Community Advocate runs to ensure investments in great public schools, transit & infrastructure, and strong communities for neighbors young and old.

Chevy Chase, MD – Former high school teacher, policy advisor to a U.S. Senator, and community advocate Jared Solomon is running for a House of Delegates seat in District 18.  Solomon, who has spent his whole career in public service, would bring compassionate, progressive leadership to Annapolis.  As a member of the House of Delegates, he would fight for increased investments in our public schools, better access to child care and high quality early learning, smart infrastructure and public transit, economic opportunity and growth, a healthy environment, and support for our seniors.

“I’m running for the House of Delegates because we have the potential to do so much good for Montgomery County in Annapolis,” said Solomon. “We can ensure that all our children have the chance for success by properly funding our public schools, increasing access to high-quality child care, and creating more career and technical education pathways for students to be job ready out of high school. We can invest in infrastructure and transit to enable our economy to grow, and we can do it in a way that is environmentally safe and sustainable.”

Solomon began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Baltimore City. At Northwestern High School, he helped to restart and coach the award-winning debate team. After teaching, Solomon worked for the Chancellor of the D.C. Public Schools and has spent the last eight years focused on improving federal policy making, most recently as an advisor to U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA). As Senate staff, he was a lead staff negotiator in reauthorizing the Elementary & Secondary Education Act, aided his boss in writing and passing legislation to make college more affordable for all Americans, and helped lead efforts to safeguard Medicaid and supports for students with special needs.

In the community, Solomon serves as the Board Chair of The Intersection, a program that teaches Baltimore high school students college readiness and civic leadership skills, and a founding board member of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence. He has advocated in Annapolis to pass the Maryland Dream Act, gun safety legislation, and paid sick leave. In 2013, he was named by the Daily Record as one of Maryland’s Top Twenty Leaders in Their Twenties. Jared and his wife Emily are proud residents of Rock Creek Forest.
